How to fill the S.P.Jain profile-based form

S.P Jain (SPJIMR in full or SP as it is usually referred to) is one of the most underrated business schools in the country. One of the highlights of the S.P.Jain admissions process is that applicants have to choose their specialization at the time of application. While this might be tough for freshers who do not have enough information and self-awareness to choose a specialization, it is a boon for applicants with work experience.

Specialization Matters
The biggest advantage of such a process is during placements. The placement team will ensure that for each specialization there are enough recruiters coming on board during the placements. For example, for a person with 3-4 years of work experience in the operations sector, S.P.Jain will be a much better option than maybe even the IIMs since there will be recruiters coming down specifically to hire people with such a profile. At an IIM the placements committee does not have the responsibility to specifically find 60 niche operations jobs.

The college also enjoys having a huge locational-advantage with Mumbai being the financial capital of the country as a well as the city where the most sought after Marketing recruiters such as HUL are headquartered.

Profile-based Calls & Score-Based Calls
S.P.Jain also has two different routes through which it gives out calls after you fill in the application form, the deadline for the same is 23-November.

Profile-based Call: The first is an interview call based purely on your profile — your profile should be in line with the specialization you apply for and what recruiters hiring for that specialization look for. This shortlist is out even without a test score. Once the CAT/XAT/GMAT results are out you need to meet the criteria given in the table below.

Qualifying Criteria CAT 2018 XAT 2019 GMAT 01 Jan 2017 – 31 Dec 2019
Overall Qualifying Criteria 85 percentile 85 percentile 85 percentile
Sectional Qualifying Criteria 75 percentile 75 percentile 75 percentile

Score-based Call: This shortlist is released after the CAT scores are out and based purely on your CAT scores.

This goes on to show that if you get a profile-based call, you will need a lower percentile to get an interview call than if you get a score-based call.

How To Fill The S.P.Jain Application Form
A great profile needs to rank highly on the following parameters:

  •  Academic track record
  • Co-curricular & extra-curricular track record
  • Profile-specialization match

So a lot depends on making a good application that reflects each of these. We will look at a screenshot of how each component of the online application looks and then discuss the best way to go about filling it.

Academic Achievements

SPJIMR Academic Achievements

Academic achievements primarily relate to such achievements as standing in the top performers in your class at various levels, X, XII, Graduation Year or in an exam such as the NTSC or JEE or Math Olympiad.

How does one go about filling this part?

Make a list of all academic achievements. Rank order them not in chronological order but in terms of

  • Level of achievement or position you secured
  • Level of competition or perceived toughness – NTSC, Olympiads, AIEEE, JEE
  • The scale of the achievement – school, city, state, district national

In case you do not have 3 academic achievements then list co-curricular achievements such as paper-presentations, journal publications or anything that is related to your academics.

Describe in less than 50 words: Try to be as brief as possible if the achievement is something that can be easily understood. Use the remaining space to describe how this is something that you have been consistently good at. For example, you have only one top 1-5 in terms of academic achievement but you have always been driven to do well academically. Add that part in the description — throughout your education, you have stood in the top 10% (do not write 10%, calculate your position) of your class etc.

Add anything that puts your achievement into perspective — the only person from your town/village/school/institution to achieve this, the number of participants etc.

SPJIMR Versatility

For the versatility section please make a list of all your areas of interest that fall out of the curricular and co-curricular category.

Do not approach it from the perspective of what evaluators might find attractive but rather look at the level of interest/achievement you have in that area. For example, if dancing is your biggest passion/interest then rank it first. Do not rush to rank social-service activities first.

If you have certificates and achievements great, but even if you do not, you can still go ahead and fill up three areas as long as you have a strong interest and have done more than your peers.

For example, if reading is a major passion, you will not have any certificates to show for the same! But use the description space to present how much you like reading — favourite genres, favourite authors, reading since age so and so, read so many books a month etc. Any genre is fine as long as it has some international/intellectual significance. For example, fantasy, science-fiction, historical fiction, all are fine. Just ensure that you do not cite Chetan Bhagat :-).

The same applies to any other area of interest that does not correspond with certificates. Applicants from this part of the world (TN & AP), please do not write watching movies since everyone does it. If you watch world cinema or any specific genre of movies a lot, are knowledgeable and can hold a conversation about the same then you can go ahead and mention movies.

Since this deals with versatility ensure that you choose three different areas. If you have participated in CSR activities at your workplace or volunteered for NGOs please include that as well.

Most importantly, when it comes to extracurriculars (not to be confused with interests), please understand that it is not a case of what you have done but what you have accomplished. So participation in various events is just that participation, no points for that, did you win anything is the question.

Again this does not apply to interest such as theatre or plays. For example, I will cite theatre or dramatics as an area of interest and cite that I have played major parts in plays right from my early schooling to college and PG, the high-point being a performing XYZ play directed by ABC etc.

Overall Versatility Rating: Rate yourself based on the diversity of things you have participated in and the level of interest across areas.

SPJIMR Overall Versatility

Responsibility Shouldered

SPJIMR Responsibility Shouldered

The two sections, personal and professional are clearly demarcated.

In the personal section, include any activity where you took or were given the responsibility. They can be

  • on-going or long-duration responsibilities such as helping you brother/sister in his/her education or guiding him/her throughout, taking up some household responsibility owing to a family situation (working parents), or
  • specific short-duration responsibilities such as arranging the wedding of a sibling or family member etc or having to help out your parent in a specific task etc.

In the professional section include responsibilities that you undertook that were not part of your KRAs or job description. They can be can be

  • handling responsibilities higher than your designation due to the absence of manpower
  • special projects/initiatives that you undertook or were given to you
  • organizing events at your workplace

In both cases use the description to put in perspective

  • the scale/importance of responsibility,
  • the role you played and
  • the quality of the outcome

Programme Details

This is possibly one of the most important aspects of applying to S.P.Jain — choosing the right specialization.

How does one go about this? The first question is whether you are applying with work experience or applying as a fresher.

Work-experience candidates should apply to the area in with the reason “relevant work-experience”. This has to be the first preference.

If you are applying with IT work-experience, unless you can really connect the nature of your work with another specialization, choose Information Management (IM). In previous years, applicants whose profiles did not match with the specialization they applied to have been reassigned to a different specialization! DO NOT make your first preference based on “special interest in this area”, make that your second preference.

In many cases, you might not find your profile relevant to any other area apart from the one in which you have work-ex. In this case, choose any of the areas as a second preference citing special interest in this area.

Freshers should apply only to Marketing or Finance.

Operations and IM both attract recruiters who are looking at people with relevant work-ex. The batches of both streams usually have an average work-ex of at least 2 years.

If your job profile involves being part of the design, procurement, production, quality control, maintenance, or logistics — anything that is part of the entire process of manufacturing and delivering a product or service (not IT products or services) — you can apply to Operations.

Mechanical engineering freshers also do not stand a chance of getting an Operations shortlist since management roles in Operations cannot be given to a fresher, recruiters look for candidates with hard-core ops work-ex.

The same thing applies to CSE/IT freshers applying to IM. Post an IM  degree you will be handling business roles in IT and there is no way you can take these roles up without having been part of a software product/services projects.

Non-engineering freshers such as Commerce, Economics or BBA graduates can apply to Finance. You can choose a second area as Marketing based on “done specialized courses in this area” or “special interest in this area”.

The reverse holds true for Engineering freshers, Marketing first and Finance next.

Please note that for Finance you will be competing with people who have “graduated in related area” such as the backgrounds mentioned above and CA. So do not mention it as your first preference unless you are really serious about it and are sure that despite your profile not being relevant you will get a shortlist through a stellar CAT score.

A safer option is to apply to Marketing (since recruiters in this sector look for freshers) based on  “special interest in this area” and Operations/Finance as a second preference under “done specialized courses in this area” or “special interest in this area”, whichever is relevant.

If you are mentioning Special Area Of Interest, you have to provide an explanation in 50 words.

Use this space to mention

  • why you like this specialization and how your skills or traits are aligned to the same and
  • the things you have done informally that demonstrate your special interest in this area.

You might have done a lot of things for which you have no certificates to show —

  • say organizing events in your college and firm or working unpaid for an event management for Marketing
  • following stock-markets or investing on your own keenly for finance
  • in both fields, you can mention the books that you have read to improve your knowledge of the same

The last part of the form is the work-experience details, the filling up of which should be pretty straightforward.

Also, freshers — internships DO NOT COUNT as work experience, whether it is done before or after college; work-experience needs to be full-time, paid, work. Start-ups can be counted as work-experience provided you have registered the firm and have proof of the same. Work experience in the family business also needs to be supported by salary slips.

Will I get a call from S.P.Jain?

If you look at the comments thread for this post you will see that there is a deluge of queries.

It is understandable. Everyone would be jumping at the chance to get a call at 85 and they just want to know if they can get a call.

Here is a simple way to figure out if you will get a call.

First Milestone — Profile-Specialization Alignment

Please understand that profiles are not evaluated independently of the specialization you have applied to.

Most aspirants think that profile-based calls evaluate the quality of your academics, extracurriculars, and work-ex in isolation. Wrong.

The question is never — do you have a good profile.

It is always — do you have a good profile for Marketing, Finance, Operations or IM.

So if you are planning to apply to specializations without following the guidelines above then you are taking a risk and you can rest assured that in all likelihood you will not get a call.

Second Milestone — Academics

If you have more than one — X, XII or Graduation — less than 80 then a profile-based call is well-nigh ruled out.

Please understand that since they are giving out calls at 85 percentile, they will expect you to have the academic capability to handle a rigorous 2-year MBA program. The only way for them to check this is your past Acads.

You might have a 90 or 10 CGPA in your X, a 75 or 7.5 in your Grad, both of which are great, but if your XII marks are less than 80 due to your IIT attempt, then there is no way that with two 70s you can get a call unless you some insane spike in your work-ex or extracurriculars.

Third Milestone — Extracurriculars

Extracurriculars kick in only after you have cleared the other two milestones. Given India’s population, you know that there would be enough people who clear the first two. This is where a good extracurriculars or versatility comes into the picture.

A good extra-curricular profile can be one that has a major achievement in one area — state/national-level sports, concert-level musician/dancer or any other achievement that clearly puts you in the top percentiles in that area — and one more interest which can be minor.

Another kind of profile can be one that has a lot of width — sports, music, social work, leadership — average achievements in one or two areas and minor in others.

I have had the odd student — an engineer with good academics and a big brand work-ex — who got a call for Finance but have not seen a single case where they eventually cleared even the first Group Interview. They themselves felt that the peer group they were sitting with was in a different league as far their knowledge and profile-match for Finance went. The same students made it to IIM-B and other big schools but could not clear the first Group Interview of SPJIMR.

So before commenting and asking me whether your profile is good, please do a sanity check above.

If you clear all the milestones your profile will be competitive.

But does it guarantee a call, it depends on the quality of the other applications.

For Finance, for example, you will be competing with candidates with two 90s and an 80 and a big brand Commerce college plus a CA/CPT/IPCC plus big brand work-ex plus social work and other extracurriculars.

SPJIMR Current Batch Profile

SPJIMR puts out the summary profiles of all the candidates who are part of the current batch. We took an exhaustive look at it and this is what we found:

MARKETING: 25 percent freshers, mixed educational background

FINANCE: 25 percent freshers, only 1 engineer

OPERATIONS: Only 1 fresher (city-topper in graduation), average work-ex of 2.5 years, 50% mechanical engineers

IM: No Freshers, only 2 students with less than 24 months of work-ex, all candidates had IT/Tech work-ex

What if I  DO NOT want to apply to the specialization my profile is aligned to?

Well very often, especially for those with IT work-ex, the whole point of an MBA is to escape IT and rediscovering one’s real passion:

  • Marketing — owing to an extroverted personality that puts people at ease or above-average exceptional communication skills or something that tells you that you will be great at making ads
  • Operations —  Mechanical Engineers, usually
  • Finance  —  it is either straightforward – the money and glamour associated with Finance as projected through Wall Street and Wolf of Wall Street, a fascination with stock markets knowing a thing or two about it and maybe having invested your own or someone else’s buck or two, a fascination with stock markets knowing nothing about it or a reason that is still inscrutable like the nature of God

So whatever your reason, if you want to change your domain — do not apply to SPJIMR. Both recruitments and admissions are aligned to profiles.

Does this mean that your MBA dreams are sealed?

Not really.

All other b-schools give you more leeway in that you are not asked about your choice of specializations in the application and in the interviews but only your reasons for an MBA in general.

What sort of profiles get calls

The whole idea of a profile-based call is to give calls out to exceptional profiles even if the CAT percentile is quite low.

From past data, it is very clear that they look at exceptional academic profiles first and then they look at other aspects of the profile. This is but understandable since the MBA is an academically rigorous course, so if they are letting you are a much lower level of CAT score, you need to have a much higher level of academic profiles.

Think of it this way, they have a certain weight for X, XII, Grad, and CAT Score. If your X, II, Grad are so good that you will get very high marks for those, a lower CAT Score will suffice.

What is a good academic profile?

A 90/90/80 is par for a SPJIMR profile-based call. It is pretty tough to get a profile-based call with lower marks than these, unless you have some crazy national level achievements or a professional degree such as a CA or CFA that is very relevant for a Finance specialization.

A rejection for a profile-based call is not a rejection of your profile

Do not take my comments about whether you will get a profile-based call or not as a referendum on the quality of your profile for MBA applications in general and become despondent!

Also, do not take rejection from SPJIMR for a profile-based call as a rejection of your profile. SPJIMR will give you a score-based call, even after rejecting you for a profile-based call if you score above 96-97 percentile!

Another thing, I do not blog for a living, I am the Chief Learning Officer for IMS and do this out of my interest over and above my daily responsibilities. Why am telling you this? So that you don’t get jittery if you do not receive an immediate reply and post — Sir, please reply sir comments 🙂 You will usually get a reply anywhere within a minute to 36 hours depending on my schedule.

This has already been a super-long post. Hope I have covered most of the stuff needed to fill the form and give you a fair idea of whether you will get a call.

In the comments section, you will have seen that I have personally replied to individual requests for profile assessments. I would like you to post a comment only if you feel that you have a query that the post does not answer. I can easily make out if someone has only skimmed through the post and dumped their profile in the comments looking for a quick-fix 🙂

Can you please guide me on the suitability of profile for old IIMs/ FMS/ SP Jain/ other top B schools

Also, I am little doubtful about activities to be put in extracurricular activities. Can pursuits of special interests (like Cricket and reading and writing on current social, political and economic issues) (no formal achievements as such) be included here.

    • Hi Chetak,

You have a pretty strong profile for Finance and should get the profile-based call from SPJIMR.

As far as the other schools go, at a percentile of around 98.5 you can get calls from a few of those listed, if you cross 99 you should be able to get a call from most of them.

About the ECAs without certificates but only interests, I have written in details about this particular part under the versatility section, use that to make the best pitch you can.

      Hope this clarifies,

      All the best!

Is there any chance of me getting the profile-based call? Please let me know.

    • Hi Sushmita,

While your work-ex is aligned to Marketing the X, and XII marks are a bit on the lower side, making the chances of getting a call a bit dicey but since you have great grad marks maybe it is not a bad idea to take a shot and do a god application, even if you do not get a profile-based call you can always get a score-based call if you score above 96.5 and I am sure you can do well in the GI given your profile

      Hope this clarifies,

      All the best!

    • Hi Vijay,

You have a really strong academic profile, work profile and achievements at work as well.

So given this, you should get a call for Ops from SPJIMR.

You can get Consulting jobs if you get into the premier b-schools that should not be a problem.

To switch to Finance and get good Fin roles, you will need a CFA without a doubt.

      Hope this clarifies,

    • Hi Shishir,

You have a good profile and since you have relevant work-ex you stand a strong chance of a getting a Marketing call. I will be surprised if you do not get one, the only weakness are ECAs and PoRs but I think the relevance of the profile should outweigh those.

      Hope this clarifies,

Do let me know through the comments if you get a call,

Sir, I know that my academics is nowhere near the expected standards( Since you stressed so much about its importance in this blog) for a profile based call. I know its a long shot but i just wanted to know if even there is some possibility that I might get a call.
    Expecting a blunt response.
    Thanks in advance.

    • Hi Praveen,

Firstly, if you want to convert anything anywhere, you should always make the right pitch and use the right words — I am jobless now is not how you should describe things, I am sure that is not how you will pitch things to your vendors 🙂

Honestly, I think a profile-based call is almost ruled out given the Grad marks, the only thing the panel might look at is your work-ex with Swiggy that is something that attracts recruiters and hence the panel. So that is the only long shot I can see since there are very few students with hardcore, good quality, sales roles.

      Hope this clarifies,

      All the best!

You can add more points if you have!

      • Akshay Vaibhav says

Yes, sir, my first preference is IM and second is marketing as a special interest. Also, I will add some more points in extracurricular and academic as well.
I had one doubt regarding one point whether to choose yes as an interview option in the month of Jan at Mumbai or a no.
It’s written there that, it doesn’t affect my chances to get a profile-based call, so shall I fill No there and wait for interviews in the month of Feb in Bangalore? Or better to give an interview in Mumbai in the month of Jan.
Note: I will have the XIMB test on 28th Jan probably.

I was actively involved in beach clean up campaigns at Versova, for which I was recognised by the United Nations Environment Program.
I also organised a beach clean up with a volunteer count of 1500 as part of my term in AIESEC.

Sir, I am interested in Finance as well as Marketing, but I am slightly more inclined towards finance. However, I do not have any experience or notable courses done in Finance.
Could you please guide me as to what would be my chance if I applied for Marketing or Finance in the profile based round in SPJIMR?

    • Hi Siddharth,

You have a good profile and have a good chance of getting a call for Marketing, chances of a finance call are next to slim and even if you do get a call the chances of converting are next to zero, so apply to Marketing first, you can apply to Finance second as an area of interest.

      Hope this clarifies,

      All the best!

    some acheivements at school/college level.
    Should i fill form?
If i not get a profile based call and got a score based call, what do you think about my profile evaluation and selection chances

    • Hi Ankit,

The duration and relevance of work-ex are the big pluses in your profile for Ops, your academic credentials pass muster, but I think it will just fall short of the getting a profile-based call, in terms of the overall profile.

The meaning of a profile-based call is only that they will give you a shot at the interview despite a low CAT score and not that they want you over the others.

If you do not get a profile-based call and get a score-based call instead, then from there it is a matter of how well you hold your own in the interview in terms of your their evaluation of your interview performance — vis-a-vis your peers. They will have ready given a rating for your profile and your CAT score, and cumulatively that would have been good enough for a call, so the only thing left from there is the interview and the other aspects of the second stage — essay writing and psychometric test.

At the interview stage, all call-getters are equal, even profile-based call-getters can end up not being selected after the interview.

      Hope this clarifies,

      All the best!

My grad score is 0.8% below 80%, but i assume this doesn’t matter. apart from that i have the below mentioned Extra Curriculars:
Proposed and Organised the first ever literature Festival in College (convener of the same) for 2 straight years.
Secretary (Head) of Literary Affairs Committee.
Won 2nd Position at NIT Conclave (Included Speech and Technical competition) held at NIT Silchar.
Was one out of 30 students selected for SP Jain School of Global Management and a trip to their Singapore Campus. (would this be negative so as to why i didnt join the course then?)
Won Several Oratory Competition in School and college.
Represented (Participated) my UT/state of Dadra and Nagar Haveli in Table Tennis Nationals (School games Federation of India)
Project Presentation at INSPIRE National Awards, Delhi.
Project Presentation at National Science Exhibition.
Member of a team at college which participated in National Level Robotic Competition (Robocon). i don’t have a certificate of the same.
State Rank 1 in Junior Maths Olympiad
Apart from that, i was the school captain.

I also wanted to know if mentioning “Scholars for Change- Initiative by IIM-A” and an internship done at UrbanClap should be mentioned here or not.
would mentioning Campus Ambassador for some Company and other colleges as a position of Responsibility be worth mentioning?

i really hope you respond and help me out in selecting points worth mentioning and if i stand a chance for the call?

        Hello Sir,
I am sorry i missed this part.
i Have been working as a Sales officer in Galaxy Surfactants from 2nd July 2018.
would mentioning “Relevant Work Experience” if applying for Marketing make sense?
also, what do you suggest i should fill the second specialization?

        thanks in advance.

      • Hi Archit,

Applying to Marketing with relevant work experience is the only option you have! You acads and ECAs are above-average so your profile will definitely be competitive.

Fin is ruled out because the educational background is not aligned. For Ops and IM, not relevant work-ex.

You can apply to any of them as a second preference since they have given you that option.

        Hope this clarifies.

Do let me know through the comments if you get a call.

        All the best!

    Hello Sir,
I am a Bsc.Horticulture graduate. My major concern is whether I even fall into any category of specialization you have mentioned above and is it a right call to apply for S.P.JAIN. Also could you please suggest to me if opting for Agribusiness Management a wise choice, opinions from different people have already confused me enough (many says it is not a wise decision). Could you please clarify.
And your articles are very informative. Thank you for explaining every topic so well. 🙂

    • Hi Sivaranjani,

Given your background, Fin, Ops and IM are ruled out (unless you are working in an IT company for 2 years).

So the only option left is Marketing. Since there is no relevant educational background for Marketing (other than BBA) all freshers and those with the relevant experience can apply to Marketing citing area of interest or relevant work-ex. So if you have good Acads and ECAs apply to Marketing.

As far agri-business goes, it is pretty good domain to get into provided you do ABM from IIM-A or IIM-L, both the schools offer placements with good roles and salaries; at IIM-L the Marketing placements are common to both. I am sure of the placement prospects of other agri-business programs.

You should apply to all other colleges as well without limiting yourself to agri-business.

      Hope this clarifies,

      All the best!

    Hi Tony Sir,

I am an engineer with 23 months IT work-ex. Could you please elaborate on what exactly the Information Management Specialization will offer in terms of course contents and placements? As per my knowledge, this specialization is unique to SPJIMR, so I’ve not been able to gather much information.

    • Hi Akshaya,

It will give you business-side roles in tech firms such as Google and Microsoft and IT services firms such as TCS, CTS etc.

Typical roles can IT Consulting roles with TCS, Infosys, CTS; Product Manager roles at Google or Microsoft, Pre-Sales/Business Development with IT services firms.

Analytics firms might also be recruiting from the IM stream.

As far as the courses go, I am not very aware, you can go to their website and check.

      Hope this clarifies,

      All the best.

Could you please tell what are my chances with above profile ?
and will they be considering future work ex as I have not left my current job and planning to continue till March which will make my work ex of 15 – 16 months ?

    • Hi Pratik,

As I wrote in the blog, academics need to be top-tier for a profile-based call, which is not the case with your profile, making the chances of a call very remote.

They will look at work-ex at the time of application submission.

      Hope this clarifies,

      All the best!

  14. Hello sir, Thank you for the in-depth article on profile-based application.
I’m highly confused about whether my profile is relevant and aligned to the course that I want to apply to at SPJIMR. I would love to have your views on it

Please have a look at my profile and guide me on, whether is this profile suitable to apply for Operations. Also, should my second option be Finance or is it relevant to marketing?

    Thank You.

    • Hi,
I think it will be a bit tough for you to get a profile-based call since your academics are not in the range that is required for a profile-based call.

For Ops, your work-ex is insufficient, at least 16 months of core Ops work-ex is a must.

For Fin and IM, there is no profile alignment.

You can apply to Ops and Marketing in that order but as I mentioned a score-based call is what you should target.

      Hope this clarifies,

      All the best!

  15. Hello sir, Thank you for the in-depth article on profile-based application.
I just wanted to lay out my profile to get an idea of whether my Profile would stand a good chance of being selected for the Marketing Major at SP Jain.

    10th:- 89.3%
    12th: 79.5%
College: 3.28/4 (82%) I did my college from the Pennsylvania State University in USA and majored in Business Management along with a Minor in Marketing

I have done a 3 month fellowship with an NGO in my hometown. I have worked almost an year in the marketing role at Vimal Dairy.

    My extracurriculars would include:-

    1) Played national level Basketball once with my school and regular State level runners up.
    2) I am a Black Belt in Karate and had taken part in various district level tournaments as well.
    3) In terms of Academics, my team and I came in 2nd in a Johnson & Johnson case study at my college and I still have all the data we had worked with
    3) I was my International Business Org’s Treasurer for a semester and helped organize many meet & greets with various industry experts like Accenture, PNG etc.
    4) I am well versed in French as my 4th language and have studied it for 5 years in school and 2 years in college.
    5) I have a fanatical interest in Football although it is mostly at European level so I am sceptical about mentioning it

Please have a look at my profile and guide me on, whether is this profile suitable to apply for Marketing. I do not intend to apply for any other major whatsoever.

    Thank You

    • Hi,

You have pretty good ECAs (you should mention your crazy interest in football as well).

You academics are average and that can be the only roadblock in your getting a profile-based call.

You should apply and hope that your ECAs, education diversity and relevant Marketing work-ex pull you through.

Apply to Marketing citing relevant work-ex.

Do let me know through the comments if you get a call.

      All the best!

      • Hi Sir, thank you for your reply.
With respect to my academics again, I was wondering if I could expand on my university, I had gotten a scholarship from my university and was also included in the prestigious Dean’s List(similar to an honour roll) for 4 of my 8 semesters there.
Should I include that in my academics section and also mention my alma mater

      • Yeah, you should mention the scholarship and Dean’s List for sure, the name of your College if it is not already there in the form.

    • Hi Harshit,

You academics are above average and competitive for a profile-based call, your ECAs are decent as well. I think it will boil down to the quality of the other applicants. You are in with a chance but not an outright one.

What are the chances of getting a profile based call for Finance?

    • Hi Pratik,

Your marks are excellent and will definitely be in the top-tier of applicants, and so are your academic achievements

For Finance, as you know, the competition is very stiff with CAs getting a final admit in large numbers.

I think your marks might get you a call despite not having the relevant educational background, professional degrees or work-ex. If you had a CFA L1, a call would have been dead certain.

Do let me know through the comments if you get a call.

      All the best!

I took an academic break after Class 12th to prepare for IITJEE. Although I couldn’t crack the competition. I’m a graduate in Civil Engineering. I’ve also done a certificate course relevant to Civil Engineering. However, I did not take up a job in Civil Engineering because the opportunities that came my way were not satisfactory. I’ve been working as the Operations Manager since July, 2018.

As far as extra-curricurals are concerned, I’m a certified Content Writer. I’m a volunteer with an NGO. I’ve a certificate in Anchoring. I’ve participated in Painting competitions as well (no certificate though). I’ve represented my school in Frank Anthony Memorial Debate, 2012 (no certificate). I’ve got the opportunity to go on-air through various radio stations representing my school (no certificate).

I have served my school as The School Captain. I have organized events in my college as the Student Coordinator.

I was the school topper consecutively for 8 years. I was amongst Top 5 students in a school level competition for 6 years. I was amongst Top 10 students in college as well.

My first preference is Finance, ‘Special Interest in this Area’. My second preference is Operations, ‘Relevant work experience’. I’m interested in Finance only. I’ll do some relevant courses on Coursera after I’m done with CAT.

    Hi Sir,
Thank you for the insights. This article is really helpful. I wanted a bit of your guidance in choosing the specialization. I have work-ex in both IT and business operations. Below is a brief of my profile:
    X – 89.3%
    XII – 89.4%
    Graduation B.E (CSE) – 76.6%
Software Development Experience (IT) – 14 months
Business Operations Experience (Management Consulting) – 19 months

I want to go with IM as first preference and Ops as second as the Business operations work-ex I have been part is more of Analytics Consulting rather than Supply chain, but it would be great if you could advise me on which specialization would be better aligned for a profile based call.

    • Hi Anant,

Your profile will be relevant for IM since IT Consulting is one of the areas that recruiters hire for from the Operations cohort at SPJIMR.

So you should, as you right analysed, apply to IM first and Operations next.

Your profile is decent and competitive enough the rest depends on the kind of applicant pool that IM attracts this year.

      Hope this clarifies,

Do let me know through the comments if you get a call.

Currently helping my father in his business operations while preparing for CAT.

I have participated in table tennis open tournaments and I have also participated in a televised singing competition.

Is my profile good enough for Profile – Based call as currently, I have been scoring 90 marks in SIMCATs.

    Thanks in advance

    • Hi Shivam,

You have a decent chance of getting a profile-based call since you have relevant education as well work-ex.

I think you should try to push your scores to above 105 so that the 85 percentile cut-off is guaranteed and you clear sectional cut-offs as well since the profile-based call will be cancelled if you do not clear the cut-offs.

      Hope this clarifies,

      All the best!

Need your views about my profile sir!!

    • Hi Gokul,

You have a good profile and the startup experience will be very valuable but the catch is that despite all of this you will not get a call from SPO Finance since the grad marks are relevance to finance of education and work-ex are low.

I think you should look at a general management program and not a specialized program such as the one at SPJIMR given your profile so far and your career aspirations.

      Hope this clarifies,

      All the best!

    • Hi Sarath,

You have a good profile for IM that should get you a call in all likelihood.

For Marketing just mention area of interest and write about the online certifications as a proof of how you have taken your interest further. You do not need to justify your interest, it is more important to prove that you have taken some steps in that regard.

      Hope this clarifies,

Marketing is my passion and i am keen about it. I have relevant education background and work experience . Sir kindly help me with this as want to get shortlisted for the same. I ave a few more certificates which i couldnt type it here

    Thank you.

    • Hi Prajjwal,

Your profile is relevant to Marketing but maybe not strong enough to get a call since your X and XII marks are quite low, your grad marks could help you pull off a call. As I wrote in the post, both academic profile and profile-relevance are absolutely crucial to get a call.

      Hope this clarifies,

      All the best!

    • Hi Tanvi,

You have a strong profile for Marketing and if you showcase your professional experience well (use the leadership role experience in the professional responsibility shouldered part) you will get a call.

      Hope this clarifies,

      All the best!

Sir, Am I eligible for this.

    • Hi Prathima,

You are definitely eligible for this! You have an exceptional academic profile that should tip the scales in your favour for an IM call, despite the fact that the work-ex is a tad low for the IM call.

      Hope this clarifies,

      All the best!

I am mainly looking for IM as my primary option.

    Thank you.

    • Hi Sai,

While the work-ex is great, the academic profile I am afraid is not strong enough to get you a call. You will have to score above 96, targeting a score-based call.

      Hope this clarifies,

      All the best!

    6) 2 Years in NSS(Social Services)

Would like to apply for Marketing and Finance. What you say?

    • Hi Yashwant,

Honestly, as I mentioned in my post, you would need to tick two checkboxes to get a profile-based call — great academic profile and relevant education or work-ex to the specialization you are applying to.

Unfortunately, you do not tick both and hence a profile-based call is ruled out despite decent versatility.

You have to score above 96.5 and target a score-based call.

      All the best!

Hello sir, thanks for this helpful post.

    My profile is:
    X 94%
    XII 92.6%
    BTech 75.8% (NIT NAGPUR-Electrical Engineering)
Work Experience-1.5 years (Reliance Industries Limited)

I am working with Reliability Engineering & Maintenance Electrical team in RIL as Planning Engineer. My responsibilities include Materials Management, Maintenance Planning ,Work order & Manpower management. As per requirement of my Role, I have good command on SAP, also I have completed certification course ‘SAP S/4 HANA Essential’ on Udemy.

Apart from this, I have interest in Finance. I have completed following courses on Finance:
    1) FLIP-Finance & Banking Fundamentals;
    2) NCFM- Equity Research
Also, I have registered for CFA L1 for June 2020.

    Extra Curricular:
    1) Participated in ‘State Level’ Volleyball tournament.
    2) I was winner of ‘District Level’ Badminton tournament.
    3) Worked as ‘President’ in School Committee.
    4) Worked as ‘Sports Secretary’ in Department Council of Electrical Department.

My first preference is Finance, ‘Special Interest in this Area’. My second preference is Operations, ‘Relevant work experience’.

    • Hi Manas,

You have a strong academic profile and work-ex aligned to Operations.

By applying to Finance you will be taking a risk since you will be competing with CAs and CFAs for the final call if not the final call.

I would suggest not trying to thread the needle in one go. Apply to Ops first and Finance next since the former has better placements within the stream than the latter. Let this be your safe bet.

If you get into any other premier school and have the CFA going into summer placements you can anyway build a career in Finance.

      Hope this clarifies,

      All the best!

What are my chances for a shortlist for IM?

and also can we add Extra Curricular’s under Versatility ?

    • Hi Vishadi,

You have a pretty strong profile for IM and you should get a call.

You should include ECAs in Versatility.

Do let me know through the comments if you get a call.

      All the best!

      • vishadi says

        Hi Sir,

I did not get a profile based call in the first round.
I got 94 percentile in cat, is there any chance in second round ?

      • Hi Vishadi,

Tough luck with the profile-based call, the only parameter on which you might have lost a few points might be quantum of work-ex, which is less than 24 months.

For a score-based call, 94 is marginally on the lower side (96 and above will have sealed it) so the chances are a bit slim but not totally ruled out.

        All the best!

    • vishadi says

      Hi Sir,

I did not get a profile cum score based call also,

Does 24 + months at the time of applying (36 + at joining) boost the chances for IM call ?.
Also, can you please suggest some things I could do to improve my chances

      • Hi Vishadi,

For both IM and Operations 24 months at the time of application is the preferred work-ex. So a work-ex around 36 months at the time of joining will come in handy in these areas

Look at the areas of your profile that are empty — Social Work, Certifications etc and take things up in those areas. For a more detailed take on profile-building go through this — https://thecatwriter.com/2020/03/02/how-to-build-your-profile-for-an-mba-3/

Thanks for the great and highly informative article. What are my chances of getting in Finance ?

    My profile details :
    X : 91.2 % (CBSE)
    XII: 93.4 (Non-medical, CBSE)
    Graduation: 8.56/10 (Computer Engg.)
    IIT-JEE: rank in top 1%

Work Ex: Software Developer. (Joined in July 2019)

Academic accolade : have been good at Maths (X: 10/10, XII: 97/100, Grad: 9.5/10)
: have been good at logic and algorithm (Grad : 10/10, won many coding competitions which are based on
    logic and Algorithm and analysis

Extra-Curricular: Social work (teaching underprivileged kids)
: Won few coding competitions. (intra-college, inter-college and internationally)
: Won few debate competitions. (intra-college)

I can apply in finance only with “special interest”. Since you mentioned that in Finance batch, there was only 1 engineer. (So what are my chances of converting even if I secure a high CAT score)
Should I do some courses to make my case stronger for finance profile consideration in the time between CAT and interviews?

Is there any other branch that my profile is more suitable for?

    • Hi Sanat,

Despite your stellar academic profile, SPJIMR Finance will be a tough ask. Maybe you will get the first call but converting the final call will be really tough since you will be sitting in a group interview with CAs and CFAs.

The biggest thing to do if you are dead serious about Finance is a CFA (all engineers serious about CFA go into a b-school having cleared L1)

Between now and the interview there are a few small things you can do – https://thecatwriter.com/2019/03/18/how-to-build-your-profile-for-an-mba-2/

      Hope this clarifies,

      All the best!

Thank you sir for your input, sorry I’m replying a little late, but for the benefit of the other aspirants, I wanted to tell how things played out.
I got a score based interview call (CAT-98.6%ile), and then somehow cleared the elimination interview round as well. But you were absolutely right about the CFA, without it, I didn’t convert the call.

Sir, I have got a profile-based call for marketing at SPJIMR.

I have 20 days before the interview. I have already completed the Marketing course from Wharton (on Coursera). I am contemplating another course in marketing.

I have the following 3 queries.

1st) I have the following 4 (marketing courses/books) in mind to make my profile inclined towards marketing. I may be able to complete only 1 or 2. What should be the top 2 or any other course I should pursue?

        a. Customer Relationship Management by IIM-B on edX

The 3 books you have mentioned in one of your articles.
        b. Selling The Wheel: Choosing The Best Way To Sell For You Your Company Your Customers by Jeff Cox and Howard Stevens
        c. Positioning: The Battle for Your Mind by Al Ries and Jack Trout.
        d. Buyology: How Everything We Believe About Why We Buy is Wrong by Martin Lindstrom.

2nd) With what I know about consulting and general management (from your IMS future you video), it looks like a suitable career to me, should I mention those in my interview as I have applied to marketing. Does an MBA in marketing open doors for consulting / general mgt. ?

3rd) I had left my job due to medical reasons (eye problems) in August 2020 and since then prepared only for CAT. Does it hamper my chances of conversion?

PS: I have 1-year experience working for an NGO in college.
: I have 14 months experience in an IT product based company.
        : Acads (X – 9, XII – 9, UG – 8.5), CAT : 97.5, GEM

        Thank you

      • Hi Sanat,

        Congratulations on the call.

        1. The course will be better than the books.

        2. I am not sure how many Consulting and General Management roles are available at SPJIMR for those who graduated in Marketing since the two are very different fields, you need to speak to someone at SP to figure out whether the Big Consults and TAS and ABG come to recruit. As of now, there is no point mentioning the same in an interview.

        3. There are no points deducted for a break, you will be questioned about it and you have to give a cogent answer without being defensive about it; my students with voluntary year-breaks have made it to the old IIMs as well.

        Hope this clarifies,

        All the best!

    • Hi Pradeepti,

You have an awesome profile right in the top-tier and should get a call provided you apply to the right specialization.
If you read the post, you would have realised that Operations is ruled out since it is usually for candidates with at least 15 months of core Ops experience. The Ops batch, on the whole, ends up having a work-ex of above 2 years.

So apply to Marketing as the first preference.

Mention the internships in the Academic section and the PoRs in the professional responsibilities shouldered section.

Do let me know through the comments if you get a call.

      All the best!

    • Hi Saloni,

You have a really strong academic profile that should help you get a profile-based call for finance.

Mention two of the three, exclude the last one, additional information points in the academic achievements section.

Tick both CAT and XAT, they will give you call if either of the scores meets the criteria.

The only options for freshers are Marketing and Finance. you will be better off applying to Marketing. You can cite relevant work-ex if your work with PwC is in Marketing Analytics, else cite area of interest.

Do let me know through the comments if you get a call.

      All the best!

    • Hi Parth,

Unless you are interested in IM, apply to Marketing citing relevant work-ex and use the professional responsibility shouldered to mention any special achievements.

      Hope this clarifies,

      All the best!

  40. Bhawini says

    Hello sir,
i got a profile based call last year from S P Jain, but couldn’t clear the cut offs.
Should i apply this year as i think my gap year might effect my profile overall.
    please suggest.

  41. Hello Sir!

Thanks for the informative article. Do you think I can get a call for the Marketing specialization?

    Here’s my profile:
    Class 10: 92.3%
    Class 12: 81.00%
Grad: 76.23% (Business Management with a 2-year Marketing specialization)

I have around 18 months of work experience (so far) in the marketing domain, with my current role being that of a Digital Marketing Manager. I have done around 6 internships in marketing while in college and held various PoRs – Head of Marketing Department for college fest and Student Committee Leader for NSS unit of my college.

Being a social service enthusiast, I’ve worked as a teacher with an NGO for 2 years and am a registered trainer with Habitat for Humanity, India, conducting skill-based training for underprivileged students.

On a personal note: I’ve won debates and writing competition in college (inter-college level) and am learning Spanish (I’ve cleared the A2 level, but have taken a break for studying). I’m also a huge support system for my family and contribute to the family business as well.

    1. Will I be eligible for a profile based call? I understand that I do not have strong academics or any academic achievements.
    2. How can I segregate the various activities I have participated in, in the different sections of the application form?
    3. What should be my other specialization option? I’m not keen on anything but marketing given my strong inclination for the field
    4. What other colleges would I be able to convert given my profile?

    • Hi Drishti,

You have a pretty strong profile for Marketing given relevant education and work-ex, that might tilt the balance in your favour since very few applicants have these as far as Marketing is concerned.

You have to put all non-academic things in the versatility section — PoRs, NGO work, debates.

Use the personal responsibility section to put in the family-related stuff.

You need not apply to any other specialization, that is fine.

Most of the other calls will be dependent on the CAT Score, a percentile above 98.75 should get you a call from a couple of old IIMs.

      All the best!

    Other Interests:
    1. As we have family business dealing in Electronics appliances,i know the nuances of running short scale business. I have handled my Shop on and off but that cannot be shown as work ex because of absence of salary slips.
But this has provided me with the perfect environment to enhance my communication, persuasive and market understanding skills. This acts as a driver for me to study and work in Marketing field.
Please suggest me on how to go about it and whether my profile is good enough for a call. and which Specialization should i opt for?

    • Hi Abhishek,

You have a fairly competitive profile. As of now, the work-ex is less than will is needed for IM, you can apply to Marketing based on area of interest and use the 50-word space to make a strong case.

Overall chances are a bit borderline.

Do let me know from the comments if you get a call.

      All the best!

    • Hi Vidhan,

Your profile is decent but I am not sure if it is strong enough to get a call since everything is above average (at least one parameter should be outstanding).

I think you have to target a score-based call.

      All the best!

    • Hi Sakshi,

You need an 85 percentile overall and 70 percentile in each of the sections to get a profile-based call from SPJIMR.

If you feel that there is no chance that you will clear these cutoffs do not apply, else apply since you have a decent chance of getting a call for Marketing.

Thank you so much for your feedback. Much appreciated. I’ve decided to apply for SP Jain keeping your feedback in mind.
Just a quick question, I’ve also started with a distance learning course from IGNOU this year, Masters in Arts – Economics. Just confused if I should mention that or no since I have just started it this year and since I’ve not given any exam, I don’t have a score.
Please suggest if I should mention that in the application, if yes, where to mention it?

Thank you again, already for all your posts! 🙂

    Thanks a lot in advance.

    • Ishita Gupta says

Sir could you also suggest what minimum CAT percentile can fetch me a call from old IIM’s, considering the diversity points and other factors?

    • Hi Ishita,

You have a fantastic profile overall that would fall into the top-tier of applicants and should be able to get you a call for Finance.

Given that you have a year of work-ex, at a percentile of 98.75 and above you can get a call or two from the old IIMs.

      Hope this clarifies,

      All the best!

  47. Ritika Agrawal says

    Hello Sir,

Thank you for helping us with your guidelines. I am still confused with which course I should apply for as many options are available or even if I have any chance as I am really not sure if I have many points to write in the application form.Kindly check my profile below and provide your feedback and suggestions.

    10th (CBSE-2010)- CGPA-9
Work Exp(Robert Bosch Engineering and Business Solutions Private Limited)-28 months
    Academic Achievements
    Responsibility Shouldered:
    professional section:

I have taken part in drama at school level, won the competition as a team,
also took part in drama at work place and won the competition as a team.

    • Hi Ritika,

You should apply to the specialization aligned with your role in your work-ex, it seems like it is Operations, if it is IT then it has to be IT, if you worked in Sales in Bosch then it has to be Marketing, Finance is fully ruled out.

Your profile is since it does not have anything exceptional might not get you a profile-based call but if you score above 96 percentile you can a score-based call.

      Hope this clarifies,

      All the best!

    • Hi Varshita,

You have a really good profile that can get you a profile-based call. As I mentioned clearly in the post, freshers can apply to Marketing or Finance, depending upon the relevance of their education background. Given that you do not have a Fin background, apply to Marketing.

Apropos NMAT, you need to apply to the colleges separately, only the scores will be sent to the colleges for free.

Do let me know through the comments if you get a call.

      All the best!
